I’m just now going through old pictures and digitializing them, and wanted to post a few pics from the summer I lived on Maui. This was in ‘05 and I was there about 4 months, boy was it great. For a country gal from landlocked Vermont, living right next to the water was totally amazing =)
I’d always wanted to go to Hawaii but couldn’t afford it, so I asked myself how could I get paid to go there and be there? So, I lined up a job with the University of Hawaii working for their Upward Bound program. I’d worked for the Upward Bound program before at Lyndon State College in Vermont, and a similar one when I worked for Stanford in Palo Alto, so I had the exact skillset they were looking for. When I found out I was hired, I screamed WHOO-HOO like Homer Simpson. Wink wink.
Here I am bright and early on top of Haleakala, the WORLD’s largest domant volcano standing over 10,000 feet. I’m bundled up as you can see because you go about and the temperature drops is about 30 degrees lower than sea level, which is kind of chilly since Maui is a constant 80 everyday.
My bus tour started at about 4:30am. We drove in from out of town and climbed all of the way to the top with an old Hawaii style school bus. Once finally at the top, we waited, and waited, and waited and waited for the sun to come up and for the clouds to rise. Because when that happened, it was supposed to be the most spectacular site ever; worth getting up at 4:30 for, hands-down.
Well you know what’s pretty funny? Until I moved to Texas, I swear that every-single-time I’d go on some awesome vacation seeking the sun and beautiful weather, I would instead, on numerous occasions wind up with rain or something! Just ask my friend Molly from Cleveland. She and I have been to Florida twice from the North, and were rained out both times. Ha. Or how ’bout talking to my friend Pat from Florida who was on a world-traveling journey. I met him Rome and I certainly brought terrible weather with me. Luckily though, when we went to the Mediterranean, it was nice one of our two days there =)
Anyway, below is what you can see if and when the clouds rise. Wink. Pretty cool. Like Larry David says: Pretty, pretty, pretty cool.
Things were sort of what the call expensive in Hawaii, so I would do things like go to the putting green and go to the park. Here is a picture of where I used to hike around quite often, especially since it was just up the street. The place is called Iao Valley State park.
