Economic Week in Review: Core CPI, retail sales provide hopeful signs

The U.S. economy received welcome news this week with
stronger-than-expected retail sales and core inflation in line with
consensus estimates. While inflation increased in May by its largest
percentage in six months, core inflation was relatively stable and
could alleviate the need for interest rate hikes by the Federal
Reserve later this year. In other news, the trade deficit grew at a
faster-than-anticipated pace, and business inventories grew in line
with expectations. For the week, the S&P 500 Index was essentially
unchanged, finishing at 1,360 (for a year-to-date total return of
–6.5%). The yield of the 10-year U.S. Treasury note rose 33 basis
points to 4.27%.
