Economic Week in Review: Economy, markets remain jittery

Despite aggressive government efforts to stabilize global financial
markets and economies, investors continue to fear a recession. The leading
stock indexes reflected this unease, remaining volatile throughout the week.
The week’s major economic reports showed some positive news, including an uptick
in existing-home sales. For the week, the S&P 500 Index fell 6.8% to 876.8 (for a
year-to-date total return of –39.2%). The yield of the 10-year U.S. Treasury note
fell 22 basis points to 3.76% (for a year-to-date decrease of 28 basis points).
