July 8 at the Omni Southpark in Austin…Maybe I’ll see you there…

“Yep, it is a motley crew indeed, but don’t mistake these 3 for what you might see on the bulletin board in your local post office.  They are actually our featured speakers for July, and all have semi-legitimate ties to NBTA.  First on the billing is our own Kevin Maguire, who also moonlights as the President of NBTA, and who will be sharing with us all the efforts and accomplishments of our national organization.  Next up, Shane Downey, the NBTA Manager of Government Relations.  Shane is a past speaker at ABTA and will provide us with a great overview of the inner workings of the NBTA PAC and how and which legislative issues are selected for action – – whether it be to support or oppose.  And last, but certainly not least, is Scott Solombrino, the President of Dav El Transportation, and the President of the NBTA Allied Leadership Council.  Scott, also a past speaker at ABTA, brings us his passion and knowledge of the PAC program, as well as his personal insight to legislative issues and the political process.”

This should be a great event. This will be my 3rd time hanging with the group, and I’m sure it will be just as good as the last two times. This group is full of some very smart,  well-respected,  passionate and professional people that I’ve learned a ton from so far. The best part is that they also know how to have fun! Tons actually!

I went to my first meeting thinking it was for “people in business that like to travel,” but learned when I got there that it was for “people that work in the travel industry.” Hahah.  Anyway, when I explained the confusion, they were like “who cares, join the party!” and so I did and had such a blast. When these fine travel industry folks aren’t working hard at work, they’re out enjoying Austin, doing things like hotel hopping in party buses, and hosting bonfires at hotels. Good, wholesome fun.

They’re having a speaker series this month at the Omni near Southpark in Austin. I’m not familiar with the area, but am excited to attend. I called ahead to see if there were any volunteer opportunities too.

When I Beach Hopped Around Costa Rica

This was from my bedroom window one of my nights when in Manual Antonio…on the Pacific side.

This was a stool in Costa Rica. Nice buns, eh?  I happen to like her jewelry on her foot. They didn’t give her very comfy shoes since she’s in her thong swimsuit and with her boyfriend who’s in swim trunks and sandals.

you had to swim across this little bit of water to enter the park to see the monkeys. It was kind of cool because it kept a lot of people out, like little kids. NOT that I don’t like kids, but it was nice to have it so secluded.

Here I’m coming out of the water from a bathroom pit-stop. I still was needing to wear my back brace a lot of times, so that’s what I’m holding on my stomach. I think sort of a re-alignment. I’m so pleased to be in better shape now that I can move around and can exercise much better.

 Bon appetite!   Harry From TheHendersons!

I love to check out college campuses when I’m traveling. I’ve been to schools from Hawaii and Washington state to Montreal and Europe. It’s a blast. Here’s the University of Washington in Seattle.

Flying into Seattle is just beautiful, especially in the winter!

AIRPLANE RIDES? A BULLDOZER That Fell Through The Only One Lane Bridge In Costa Rica… Are You Serious?

Posted on July 6, 2008. Filed under: -- Uncategorized, -- What MOLLY's Up To | Tags: , , |

By Molly Greaves

This is one of the funniest signs I’ve ever seen. It’s sort of hard to see here, but it says AIRPLANE RIDES, and it’s this place in the middle of NOWHERE in Costa Rica that has about 5 junker cars on the lot, chickens running around everywhere, that offers airplane rides. Matt and I thought that was the funniest thing we’d ever seen.  Looked like you definitely might go up, but who knows about how you’d come down.

Here’s the school 5 miles down…I wonder if they worry about “No Child Left Behind” I doubt it.

Even funnier than this though, it that Costa Rica doesn’t have “real” bridges. What I mean is everything is one-lane, and the bridges are also VERY narrow. Most were EXTREMELY nerve-racking to drive across, and one day when cruising to a different town, we got stuck there because a BULLDOZER type thing FELL THROUGH the bridge, causing us to have been backed up FOR HOURS. We waited in this really long line of traffic for probably almost 6 hours. Yep, 6 hours for tons of people to stand around wondering what in the heck they were going to do. We were STARVING and totally annoyed, but the local Ticos seemed to act like it was the norm.  I guess that’s a great example of what being on Tico Time means.

Talk about FRUSTRATING! We wanted to be on the beach or off drinking Margaritas!

And here is what the police station looks like there…for some reason, they never even showed up to the 6 hour debacle. We figured they were stuck somewhere else too.

Montpelier, Vermont: The State Capital You Could Never Remember

By Molly Greaves

Here I am in Vermont! Good Ol’ Vermont. State population just about 600,000.

Born and raised in Vermont, I sometimes make it back to see the ‘rents. I don’t go as often as I should, because I usually try to visit places I haven’t been before since I lived in Vermont 18 YEARS!  I’ve been away for 8 years and I especially have a hard time going back up there when it’s cold, that’s for sure.  Luckily some of them come to me.

In this picture, I’m there in the winter. In this picture I’m in Montpelier to be exact; Vermont’s good ol’ state capital. I’m sure you remember Montpelier now that I mention it is the state capital, as I’m sure  it was a pain in the butt for you to remember it when doing states and capitals in elementary school. Cheyenne (Wyoming) always seemed to give me problems as a young buck.

Anyhow, I love to visit state capitals and usually hit Vermont’s up when I’m home. Montpelier is the only state capital without a McDonalds! Ha. True Montpelier is a smaller sized “city” but I believe it’s just another example of how Vermonters don’t really like Corporate America.

The day of my visit was a nice day, and I was wearing my favorite scarf. I’ve since lost the thing with my moving down to Texas. I’m okay with it only because I have to be because I could certainly find times in Austin where I could wear it. It was so cute… green with white polka dots.  Lucky for me though, Austin’s warm and has over 300 sunny days a year so I haven’t needed it yet.

Welcome To TEXAS…Driving IN From Louisiana

Posted on July 6, 2008. Filed under: -- What MOLLY's Up To | Tags: , , , , , |

On my first road trip back home to Austin from New Orleans, I noticed this welcome sign into Texas. Before coming to Texas, I wasn’t a George Bush fan but now having lived in Texas for more than 3 years, I am now. Either way, I thought I’d share the welcome sign with you.  I like how the welcome sign is followed by a nice BIG Texas Lonestar. That’s very Texas-like as well.

Ya ever seen this thing is Seattle? Gosh do I love Seattle. I’m a huge fan of large cities. I think it’s because I come from the remotest part of the remote world.

I have no idea what this thing I’m standing with is called, but wish I did. I’ve had a hard time Googling it and finding out, but hopefully I’ll find out soon. I’ll update this note if I do! Stay tuned…
